Budget cuts force WVC to close Main Street Learning Center in Brewster

State budget cuts are forcing Wenatchee Valley College to close the Main Street Learning Center in Brewster. The college had taken over the operation this fall at the request of SkillSource, who faced earlier budget cuts.

“We had hoped to continue the educational offerings at the center, but the severe downturn in the economy has forced cuts to services and classes throughout our district, including the Wenatchee and Omak campuses,” said Jim Richardson, president of WVC. “This is not something we wanted to do, but we have no choice.”

The state directed the college to cut $600,000 from its current budget, and more cuts are coming, said Richardson. “Students want and need these classes. It’s unfortunate these cuts are made when education and training are most needed and can be part of the economic solution.”

The college had hoped to manage the Brewster center for at least one year, possibly longer. The college had provided adult basic education, English as a second language and GED classes at the center for years.
